If you missed out on the 2009 SxS & ATV Roundup in Huntsville, TN on September 4th through 7th, we would agree that you should never forgive yourself. First off, Brimstone Recreation where the event was held is probably one of the most incredible ride adventures that an ATV or SxS enthusiast could ever experience. With nearly 20,000 acres of off-road nestled in the remote mountains of Northeast Tennessee, located in the Heart of Appalachia and a community that loves off-roading, this place is literally heaven. The Roundup offered more events over a four-day period than most people could accomplish in a year starting with the most scenic trail rides offered in the southeast. On Saturday morning, the event promoters kicked of the day with extremely fun activities such as a show-n-shine, drag racing, poll bending, mud bogs and even a dash for cash for ladies only. By the way, the ladies dash for cash was probably one of my favorite parts of the weekend as nearly 50 ladies barreled their way through that awful smelling mud bog in order to walk away with $1,300. The winner of that event was none other than ATV Rider Magazine contributor and GNCC Woman's class racer Jesi Stracham. Not bad for a hard days work. As the sun began to crest over those Appalacians on Saturday afternoon, everyone went back to camp and began cleaning up for a concert on the top of the mountain. The headliner for the night was none other than country music star John Anderson. Needless to say, that mountaintop was packed out with thousands of people with only standing room available.
Early, and I mean very early Sunday morning, we woke up to drizzling rain and a nasty overcast day. The ATV version of the King Of The Mountain four-hour endurance race would kick off at 8:00 A.M. The obstacle course in this race was absolutely dreadful to many of those on quads. Littered with whoops, mud holes, massive logs, gnarly rocks and even crushed cars, the riders battled furiously for four hours to become KOTM. At 1:00, the main event for the day kicked off. It would be the four-hour endurance race for the SxS's and most of us were sure it would lead to utter destruction while trying to navigate through the rough obstacle course. These side-by-sides creped and clawed their way through this wet and gnarly course with vengeance. It was certainly an event worth seeing.
